Platinum falls more than $40 in New York

Precious metals prices were lower in New York trade on Friday.

December gold dropped $3.10 to $672 per troy ounce in early afternoon trade on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange as the dollar gained and new data showed that the US economy expanded more than had been expected in the second quarter.

September silver as also lower, falling 25 cents to $12.70 per troy ounce and looks to notch a 4.8 percent decline for the week as a whole.

October platinum dropped substantially, trading $41.40 lower to $1,286.70 per troy ounce.
